I’m determined to improve… so I thought it would be a good idea to make myself a list of problems identified in the tutor report, and note down how I will respond or may have already responded.
Somehow I’m already less negative about my drawings skills because when I compare my work for part 4 to that for part 3, I see there’s development. Maybe it just took some time to warm up again after the pause of almost a year. I also think that I am in the process of developing “good working habits” and feel that I get better organized and a bit more independent in decision making, concerning paper choice, size, media. These may be only small steps but I think they are into the right direction.
Having digested the initial frustration about the assessment of part 3, I’ll include a brief summary of the main critique points as a reminder for myself. Then in the time to come will try to incorporate the really helpful suggestions into what I’m doing. I don’t know, maybe I’ve already digested much more than I consciously know. For example, I realize that my way of looking has changed. When I sit in the bus, I observe people as if I wanted to draw them, look at he folds in their clothing, notice the reflecting light on metal bars. When I walk through the streets, I’m looking as if I had my sketchbook with me and wanted to do quick studies on everything. It’s a bit strange! But I guess that’s part of the process that this course aims to get going in students.

Overall Comments: Not much development from initial studies to a final piece – no refinement or improved execution
Project 1 (Drawing outdoors): Making many studies is fine, but they should show development
Problems:
– unskilled use of media
– repetitive because there’s no development
Suggestions:
– use different media in a variety of ways
– try to capture an atmosphere
– practice of formal elements: textures, tones, colours, composition
– review the work and search for ways to improve
Project 2 (Perspective)
– Not enough evidence of skills when dealing with perspective
– the two drawings lack colour, scene, and a personal voice
Project 3 (Townscapes)
– Some drawings with potential, but they need refinement
Project 4 (Drawing trees)
– One study with potential, could have been further developed in follow-up drawings
Assignment 3 (View out of the window)
– Preliminary studies look rushed
– Final drawing has many weaknesses in fundamentals: unsufficient consideration of linear elements, use of media to create tone, lack of mood of a scene
Sketchbooks/Learning logs
– reflective but no awareness how improvement might be possible
Suggestions
– try and have more confidence
– look at other OCA student’s work and their solutions to similar problems
– read the grading criteria
